What's in Your Control

front view of my installation, What's in Your Control. There's a viewer participation component on the front legs of the table/canopy like structure

In What's in Your Control (2022), I wanted to show what it feels like to have poor mental health both mentally and physically, hence the negative thoughts written down on the slips of paper and computer error messages, respectively. I left those out of the viewer's control. Instead, I added a component where viewers are invited to write down things that help them get through their lives, such as prayers, meditation, and affirmations. On the front of the installation, I supplied pencils and colourful slips of paper. Over the course of its displayed life, the floor of this installation accumulates these positive messages from the public. It is my hope that through those two components, those who see and interact with the piece will understand that many aspects of mental health issues cannot be directly controlled, but the effect they have on a person can be lessened with purposeful, healthier practices.
